Have you considered the rainbow?
And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between Me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all future generations: I have placed My bow in the clouds, and it will be a sign of the covenant between Me and the earth. Whenever I form clouds over the earth and the bow appears in the clouds, I will remember My covenant between Me and you and all the living creatures: water will never again become a flood to destroy every creature. The bow will be in the clouds, and I will look at it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all the living creatures on earth.” God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant that I have confirmed between Me and every creature on earth.”
Genesis 9:12-17 HCSB
God has made many covenants with us throughout history. One of the most recognizable is the rainbow. Let’s look at it and see what we can gather from its meaning.
There are seven colors that make up the rainbow.
- Red
- Orange
- Yellow
- Green
- Blue
- Indigo
- Violet
That is significant because of the numerology of God. Seven is God’s perfect number. There are 7 days of creation, 7 Festivals, 7 musical notes, 7 churches in Revelation, etc. (click here for more about seven).
The point is, to God, 7 is very important!
Each color also has meaning…
- Red represents the blood Jesus shed for us.
- Orange is the dawning of life with thru Jesus.
- Yellow is for God’s perfect light that shines through Jesus in us.
- Green reminds us that God created the earth and trees. Like the grass in spring, it represents the new life we have in Jesus.
- Blue represents the color of water. God created the oceans & seas, this meminds us of the baptism that identifies us with Jesus.
- Indigo is for our new tomorrows.
- Violet is for Jesus’ hours of sorrow, so we can gain the crown of life.
- White (all colors combined) represents God’s purity and the cleansing of our sins thru God’s grace.
- Black (the absence of all colors) represents our sins and God’s darkest day.
God has given the promise of Christ from the beginning. He has always had a plan of salvation in the works. He has even set His bow in the sky to remind Himself and us of those promises. Whenever you see a rainbow, remember God’s promise to us. Trust in Him and keep looking up!
