Holy Week

Palm Sunday…

“they took palm branches and went out to meet Him. They kept shouting: “ Hosanna! He who comes in the name of the Lord is the blessed One — the King of Israel! ” Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written: ‘Fear no more, Daughter Zion. Look, your King is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt (Zachariah 9:9)’.”

The Sunday before Passover Jesus makes, as we call it, His Triumphant Entry. Fulfilling the Old Testament prophecy of the new king coming into the city riding a donkey, Jesus incited the crowds into shouts and celebration. “Hosanna” means “Savior or rescuer.” The Jewish community must have had a deep belief that Jesus was the promised Messiah, and that He would free them from Roman rule. This of course would set the stage for the crucifixion that would take place in only five days!

Jesus had come to save, and was rightful to enter the city in such a way. Only, He was not there to spark a revolt and was most certainly not concerned with the physical freedom that the Jews were longing for. The freedom He would offer would come at a much higher place. His freedom comes through Heaven. The only way to it is through Him!

Our King has come to set us free! Jesus is our Hosanna!

Enjoy this Palm Sunday, and reflect on what it meant for Him to enter the city this way, knowing that by the end of the week, He would have to make the final sacrifice.
